Turbomachinery Workshop on Advances in Aerodynamic Design of Turbines and Mixed Flow Compressors

On November 7th, 2017, a turbomachinery workshop organized by Asst. Prof. Beni Cukurel was held at the Technion Aerospace Department for the fifth consecutive year. The training activities were geared towards creating a platform for world’s leading minds in the field of turbomachinery to come and share their knowledge with students, members of academia and industry.

This year we had the honor of hosting Dr. John Clark from Air Force Research Laboratory (Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH, USA) and Mr. Abdul Nassar from SoftInWay Turbomachinery Solutions Pvt. Ltd. – experts in the fields of turbomachinery components design.

Dr. John Clark’s session was on the topic of advances in turbine aerodynamic design process, and included sections on:

  • Iterative Design
  • 2D Profile Design
  • 3D Steady and Unsteady Navier-Stokes Analysis
  • Component Design for Reduced Unsteadiness

Mr. Abdul Nassar presented on the topic of mixed flow compressors, and covered aspects such as:

  • Introduction to Mixed Flow Compressor Design
  • AxSTREAM™ Platform for Turbomachinery Design
  • Designing from Specification
  • Profiling and 3D Blade Design

Members from branches of MAFAT, Israeli Air Force, Bet Shemesh Engines, Rafael, Israeli Aircraft Industries and Technion faculty/staff/students attended the event. Total registration included over 50 participants. We have received significant positive feedback from all those who attended the sessions.
